"I removed all the calculus, and stain from my patient. Then I gave them a product that builds calculus and stain!"
As a Dental Professional have you found yourself thinking this? Although these side effects are frustrating to have to deal with, they are not the only reason to not use products containing Chlorhexidine. Some doctors have reported that their patients have both temporarily, and sometimes permanently, lost their sense of taste. Beyond this even more serious side effects have been noted, such as severe allergic reactions, and in rare occasions-death! Products containing chlorhexidine are not recommended to be a part of long term oral care. But what about conditions and restorations in the mouth that require more aggressive regular care (periodontal disease, implants)? If these side effects are not reason enough to avoid using it, the taste is; patient compliance suffers due to the unpleasant initial and after taste. Chlorhexidine is a great bacterial eliminator, but at what cost? For a long time chlorhexidine was our only option to give to our patients, now there is an alternative.
Activated Chlorine Dioxide Has Many Advantages Over Chlorhexidine
Chlorhexidine has long been considered the “Gold Standard,” in dentistry, however more recent studies are pointing us in a new direction. Chlorhexidine tastes bad, stains teeth, has low patient compliance, worsens calculus and can only be used for 2 weeks and even though dentists and patients alike hate Chlorhexidine, it was once our only choice. Dentist Select’s Activated Oral Cleanser OraCare now offers an alternative. The active ingredient Chlorine Dioxide is able to kill bacteria, and viruses, combat fungi, and break down biofilm (dental plaque), it is also safe enough to be used on a daily basis indefinitely. Plus OraCare tastes great so patients love it!
Dental professionals are very aware of how well Chlorhexidine at killing bacteria, but that is not the only pathogen present in a patient’s mouth. Viruses, fungi, volatile sulfur compounds, and biofilm (dental plaque) all accompany bacteria in the oral cavity. What are we doing to combat all of these other pathogens? When rinsing with OraCare, the Chlorine Dioxide present in the rinse has properties that will help reduce each of these!
